Back in January a new partnership between MLB and The Scotts Company that would allow baseball fans to purchase the same type of grass used in their favorite ballparks for their own yard. Well, having an entire yard may be a bit much for some baseball fans, but if you live in Philadelphia or are just a Phillies fan, there's an alternative.Following the 2009 season the Phillies completely removed the original sod from Citizens Bank Ballpark and have re-sodded it for the 2010 season. Still, they didn't want to just throw all the old stuff out, after all, a World Series was won on that grass. So instead of tossing it, they're now giving Phillies fans a chance to buy it.
Fans can go to phillies.com or stadiumassociates.com to purchase 3" by 3" pieces of the sod, that have been freeze-dried, preserved and kept in a UV-glass case. Each piece comes with a photo of Citizens Bank along with some highlights about the park, and features a tamper-proof, hologram sticker that can be verified at the Phillies' official website.
Each case is individually numbered 1 through 2009.
Now, depending on which piece of grass suits your fancy, the costs vary. You can get the plain old green kind of grass for the price of $79.99, or if you're feeling frisky, you can drop $119.99 for a square of grass that had the Phillies "P" logo painted on it behind home plate during the postseason.
Whichever way you go, you're likely setting a personal record for amount of money spent on grass that you had no intention of smoking.
