The health care bill that President Barack Obama signed into law this week requires restaurant chains to post calorie counts on their menus and drive-through signs, The Associated Press reported.
The change applies to chains with 20 or more stores. It could take effect as early as next year, but any legal battles might push the date back.
The rule will make it a lot easier for diners to track whether they're staying within the 2,000-calorie daily maximum that the U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends for the average adult.
The chart below presents a sampling of calorie counts for items from popular fast-food chains. Restaurants have been trying to offer healthier, lower-calorie foods in recent years. But as the numbers show, it's still very easy to squander a days' worth of calories on a single meal.
