Lance Berkman to Start Season on Disabled List

Lance BerkmanLance Berkman's recovery from arthroscopic surgery isn't going as well as planned and Houston's slugger will begin 2010 on the disabled list, the Houston Chronicle reported Wednesday morning. The surgery was done two weeks ago to clean out his right knee and will keep him out until at least April 10.

Berkman's coming off a 2009 season in which he played in only 136 games, just the second time he's played fewer than 150 games since 2001. His numbers have slowly started dipping as well; 2007 and 2009 are the only two years in the same time span that his on-base percentage has been below .400.

This is all important because of the pending $15.5 million option the Astros hold on Berkman for the 2011 season. There are obvious concerns with paying a 34-year-old who's obviously slowing down that kind of money. Berkman has already indicated that he's not that interested in re-negotiating if the team doesn't pick the option up, so things could get very interesting if the knee injury slows Berkman up for more than another week or so.

Of course, Berkman's health is also paramount to whatever slim chances the Astros have to contend in 2010. Even with him in the lineup, the Astros will be starting a fair share of question marks and light bats. Without him, things could get pretty ugly.
