Rams Planning to Work Out Colt McCoy?

Colt McCoySt. Louis is a lock to take Sam Bradford with the No. 1 pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, right? Not so fast ...

The Rams will reportedly schedule a private workout with Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, a move that could hint at a major shift at the top of the draft. Citing a league source, ESPN's James Walker is reporting that St. Louis would like "an extended and more personal look" at McCoy after his pro-day workout Wednesday.

The Rams were in attendance for Bradford's pro day at Oklahoma Tuesday and have a private workout tentatively set with him on April 19, three days prior to the start of the draft.

The first thought here? Smokescreen. The Rams might simply be trying to convince other teams that they're not set on Bradford at No. 1, thus keeping open possible trade discussions. If St. Louis could drop down out of the top spot and still land Bradford, for example, that would be the team's ideal situation.

It's also worth considering the possibility that the Rams are trying to drive down Bradford's price -- Matthew Stafford landed a six-year, $72 million deal with Detroit last year. Bradford will ask for more than that, a demand St. Louis may not be willing to meet. Rams general manager Billy Devaney said at the NFL Scouting Combine that four players were on the team's radar at No. 1 overall: Bradford, Jimmy Clausen, Ndamukong Suh and Gerald McCoy.

Colt McCoy's out of the question at No. 1 overall and would probably be considered a significant reach at No. 35, which is the first pick of Round 2 and also belongs to St. Louis. The Rams, 1-15 last season, hold the first pick in all seven rounds, as well as the 24th pick in Round 5 and a pair of additional Round 7 selections. Conventional wisdom has McCoy well below Bradford and Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen in terms of top QB prospects, though he's in the mix behind them -- along with Florida's Tim Tebow, Cincinnati's Tony Pike, West Virginia's Jarrett Brown and others.

Of course, it's not out of the realm of possibilities that St. Louis would make a reach for McCoy at No. 35 (or at the top of Round 3), then using the No. 1 pick on Suh or Gerald McCoy. The final decision likely won't be made until at least after Bradford's one-on-one workout later in April -- and, now, on how McCoy performs if he gets in front of St. Louis' coaches and scouts.
