Every Friday, FanHouse sifts through the rubble and picks the best NHL fight, with the help of HockeyFights.com.As the season winds down, retribution becomes less and less important. Guys know they have to avoid the large penalty that comes with instigating a fight, because being on the ice is more important.
However, there were still some high-quality scraps over the last week. The best came in a game that wasn't even televised. Of course, that didn't stop us from locating the video.
Also on the menu for this week is a minor-league fight that caused a forfeiture and is so crazy you have to see it to believe it.
Beatdown of the Week: Zack Smith vs. Patrick Kaleta
Kaleta obliged Smith, who used his stick to request a fight after a hit. Smith probably wishes he'd picked on someone else, as Kaleta pretty much owned the fight, getting all the good shots in before Smith finally fell to the ice and pulled Kaleta down to end the scrap. Watch the video here.
Double-Nickels Fight of the Week: Ben Eager vs. Cam Janssen
No. 55, meet No. 55. Janssen actually fought twice in this game against the Blackhawks, but this one was his best. Eager got a couple shots in, but Janssen really controlled this thing from the get-go. He's had a good year with the fists. Watch this fight here.
Runner Up: Roman Polak vs. Colin Wilson
Wilson only gets this honor because he's not a fighter, and he deserves a ton of credit for not turtling when Polak pulled him away from a pileup and started making like he was going to prey on the rookie. Wilson's first NHL fight was a pretty good effort against a tough guy in Polak, who should know better than to pull non-fighters into fights like this. Watch it here.
Newsmaking Fight of the Week: Knoxville Ice Bears vs. Fayetteville FireAntz
Numerous suspensions and fines were handed down by the Southern Professional Hockey League after this fight, which broke out Saturday night. The FireAntz actually ran out of players and had to forfeit the game when only two were eligible to be on the ice for a faceoff. The best part? These two teams lock horns in the playoffs starting Friday night. Enjoy!
Oh, and you can watch the video here. Be warned it is at least partially NSFW.
Fight of the Week: Wade Belak vs. Steve MacIntyre
This was one of the better stand-up fights of the year, with both guys throwing heymakers once the gloves were off. MacIntyre won decisively, but Belak was not embarrassed in the least. Thank goodness for Jumbotrons, because the game wasn't televised (Versus had exclusive television coverage of Boston-Buffalo Monday night, blacking out any games within two hours of that start time), and were it not for the in-arena video, we never would have seen this one.
