Chris Bosh Out for Regular Season Due to Broken Face

How bad are the fractures in Chris Bosh's face, those suffered Tuesday night as a result of an errant (and unintentional) Antawn Jamison elbow? They are not bad enough to require plates or screws, which is good news for the Raptors -- such a surgery would leave Bosh off the court for months, and end his season completely. But the fractures are bad enough that doctors won't be able to fully assess the situation for 7-10 days, which means Bosh's regular season is done.

Doug Smith of the Toronto Star reports Bosh won't play until doctors can assess how Wednesday's surgery on the Raptor's nose worked out. Toronto has four games remaining, the final one Wednesday against the Knicks. The Raptors are clinging to a half-game lead over Chicago, and the pair of teams will meet Sunday at the Air Canada Centre. The Raps meet the Hawks in Atlanta Friday, and visit Detroit Monday. Chicago has a tougher slog -- games against Cleveland and Boston, along with a season-ending visit to Charlotte, a game at New Jersey and the Toronto face-off. The Raptors own the tie-breaker by virtue of two previous wins over the Bulls.

If the Raptors do hold on, they'd draw ... the Cavaliers, the team against which Bosh broke his face and a team against which Toronto has lost three of four this season. The series would start in about 10 days. If Bosh is cleared to come back (in a mask, natch), will he? Is it even worth it? He's a proud dude, a real fighter who has begged for toughness from his teammates all season. But the only thing worse than getting swept by a dominant foe is getting swept by a dominant foe while your nose is strapped onto your head by an uncomfortable piece of hard plastic.

By the way, if one slightly positive thing has come out of this awful, depressing injury, it has to be the Star's illustration of Bosh's injury. It's like the dissolution of Pangea, continental drift or Southern secession ... all on Chris Bosh's face! Unreal.
