We know this much: He will not be playing in the Penguins' final regular season games, as the NHL has suspended him two games for his hit on Islanders forward Josh Bailey during the third period of Thursday's regular season finale at Mellon Arena, a 7-3 Penguins win.
Bailey tried to play the puck in the corner and was then sent face-first into the boards when Ponikarovsky hit him from behind.
Here's the video:
Ponikarovsky was issued a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct. According to the NHL, he will also be losing $21,813.48 as a result of the suspension. Bailey suffered a cut and did not return to the game. (Update: Bailey also suffered facial fractures and will be out 4-6 weeks.)
The Penguins and Islanders meet again on Sunday, in New York, to close out the regular season.
