A couple of years ago, I put together a photo essay of what it was like to be a judge at the Houston Texans cheerleader tryouts. I was a judge again this year, and reflecting on my experience, I'm not sure I really conveyed how difficult being a judge can be. The best analogy I can think of is old-school Space Invaders, but instead of invading alien ships, it is waves and waves of dancing cheerleader types coming right at you. Hundreds of them, in groups of five, waiting for their turn to do the required dance and then a freestyle dance for your approval. Aiiiiiiiiii!
Now you might be saying, "Hmmm, hundreds of highly flexible and fit women between the ages of 18 and 25. I am prepared to accept such peril." Really? To see if you are adequately prepared, I've put together a short video that only shows a small percentage of the contestants, and only part of their performances:
It's not too late to be a judge. The finalists will be performing at the Texans Draft Party at Reliant Stadium and the fans can pick the final squad.
The Texans have had one member of their cheerleading squad voted "hottest" in the league, and their tailgating named best in the NFL, so I guess maybe next comes the Super Bowl. Baby steps.
