Cowboys owner Jerry Jones isn't afraid to speak his mind, and it's gotten him in trouble with the NFL in the past. Tuesday, Deadspin posted a video of what looks like Jones pontificating on Tim Tebow's future and what Bill Parcells is really like. Not sure if this will require a meet-and-greet with commissioner Roger Goodell down at NFL headquarters, but it's embarrassing nonetheless.
Either way, Jones, apparently inebriated, is filmed on a cellphone camera talking about Tebow ("He'd never get on the field"), Parcells (" Not worth a [expletive]"), Tony Romo, and his new stadium.
NSFW language video, rough transcription and analysis below.
And, via Deadspin, obviously, what was supposedly said:
Jerry Jones: Romo was a miracle. Now, the immediate reaction to this could be, "BURN THE BLOGS TO THE GROUND!!!" That's silly and, ultimately, a knee-jerk response -- this wasn't a blogger hanging out with Jones in a bar, and it wasn't a blogger asking Jones the questions. It was a reader of a web site who found this video and sent it along to said web site.
Other guy: It was a miracle, wasn't it?
JJ: He almost never got in, and he almost was gone. Tebow would never...
Different other guy: What if you were the Jaguars or - would you just, just draft him and sell [bleeping] jerseys?
JJ: That's the only reason I brought in Bill Parcells.
[Laughter]
JJ: [Inaudible. Sounds a little like, "Sell mammoth [bleepin'] rake," whatever that means.]
JJ: Bill's not worth a [bleep]. I love him.
Different other guy: I know you do.
JJ: Not worth a [bleep], but I wanted - they were on my [bleep] so bad. J's gotta have a yes man. So to get this [bleepin'] stadium, I need to bring his [bleep] in.
Different other guy: What, you, you wouldn't take Tebow in the third round?
JJ: Why? He'd never get on the field. I can't get him out there.
[Laughter]
JJ: I can't get him out there.
Why? Because Jones makes statements about his former coach, a current draft prospect and the manner in which he got his stadium. Now, the only thing that might be considered inflammatory are Jones' thoughts on Parcells -- it's not news that Tebow is considered to be a bad quarterback prospect in the NFL by many observers and it's a straight-up fact that Romo almost didn't make the NFL.
It doesn't seem likely that Goodell would punish Jones, but the Parcells comment could end up being a little awkward. (Although ESPN's Chris Mortensen, when discussing the story after the World Wide Leader aired the clip, pointed out that Jones' comment about Parcells' worth could be classified as a "term of endearment.")
That might be a stretch, but even if Parcells is angry, his biggest retaliation would be, at most, a private conversation with Jones.
