Golf Digest Apologizes to Y.E. Yang for Dan Jenkins Tweet

Dan Jenkins is 80 years old and not only has he been writing about sports for more than a half-century, he's been doing it better than just about everybody else. He's also taken to Twitter like somebody a quarter his age, which might be more impressive.

But one of Jenkins' tweets from last week's Masters wasn't so well received.

Y.E. Yang, the defending U.S. Open champion, offered this rebuttal via Twitter:

Not surprisingly, some people were offended by the tweet, and Golf Digest issued an apology a few days later: "Dan Jenkins' Masters tweet about Y.E. Yang generated several letters of protest. Jenkins' reference was intended to play off the PGA champion Y.E. Yang's name and the P.F. Chang's restaurant chain. We removed it from our archive and apologize for any offense. Certainly none was intended."

For what it's worth, Yang is from South Korea. P.F. Chang's bills itself as a "Chinese Bistro."

As far as I know, Jenkins has never written anything remotely controversial when it comes to race, but that doesn't change the fact that this particular tweet was insensitive. That said, it's not in the same conversation as, say, Bobby Clampett's Masters slip-up a few years ago (although, clearly, some disagree, and that's their right). I'm not condoning Jenkins, just pointing out that sometimes things have a way of getting blown out of proportion on the Internet.
