Like millions of Americans, I missed the E! True Hollywood Story on Tiger Woods that premiered Wednesday night. Thankfully, the Internet has condensed 60 minutes of fluff, commercials and common knowledge and culled the most interesting bits from Woods' life. Like this: his college teammates nicknamed Woods "Urkel." As in Steve Urkel, the lovable, high-water-wearing, nerd next door who starred in the sitcom Family Matters.
Via USMagazine.com:
"The golf team is not like being a college football player, it's not like he was a basketball star, so he wasn't the big man on campus," said someone who knew him then, "He had a nickname, Urkel; he felt like it was insulting to him, he felt like it was borderline racist. And it just made him feel like he was back in high school again."
And like a lot of teenagers, he grew into his body. He went from gawky to singlehandedly making golf cool in a few years. Or, to continue to the Family Matters theme, he went from Steve Urkel to Stefan Urquelle. Unfortunately, he ODed on the "Cool Juice" and ended up in sex rehab.
