Cal Ripken Jr.With the Orioles off to a terrible start in 2010, Peter Angelos is as unpopular as ever in Baltimore. Even worse for Angelos than his club's 1-10 record is yesterday's report from FOX's Ken Rosenthal than franchise legend Cal Ripken Jr. recently sought work in the O's front office and was turned down by Angelos after meeting with team president Andy MacPhail.

Angelos moved quickly to deny the story, telling the Baltimore Sun today that Rosenthal's report is "inaccurate and grossly incorrect," that he and Ripken have an "excellent" relationship, and that Ripken is welcome to work for the club, though he can't imagine Ripken accepting a secondary role of any sort.

On one hand, it's hard to imagine even Angelos being stubborn enough to refuse a job to Ripken because of the huge PR backlash it will undoubtedly create. On the other hand, Rosenthal's report that Angelos doesn't want people to think MacPhail is in charge and doesn't want to share any glory with digging the team out of the AL East cellar with Ripken sounds like classic Angelos.

The only person we haven't heard from yet in this saga is Ripken. Perhaps he'll be able to shed a little light on what really happened between him, Angelos, and MacPhail.
