NEW YORK -- Tim Tebow won't attend the NFL Draft Thursday night in Radio City Music Hall, according to a report on the NFL Network. We know this report is sound because it also says the NFL Network will have a crew with Tebow at his home in Florida, and who would know something like this better than the NFL Network?
This isn't a big surprise. I spoke with Tebow on Tuesday night in Manhattan at the release party for EA Sports' NCAA Football '11 video game (after he spent some time playing the game, as himself), and he seemed to be leaning that way. He told me his biggest concern was that he wanted to be able to share the experience with his family, and he didn't think he could get everybody to the city that he wanted to have there with him.
"If I could get my whole family here, that might make a difference," Tebow said.
So I followed up by asking him if he'd never imagined himself at the draft, hearing his name called by the commissioner and holding up the jersey of the team that drafted him, and he gave me an are-you-kidding-me look.
"Oh yeah," he said. "I think everybody who's played college football has imagined that."
However, it appears as if Tebow wants his draft-day experience to look more like Mark Sanchez's than Matt Stafford's. Sanchez, you may remember, was at his agents' offices in Southern California surrounded by friends and family when he learned the Jets were taking him No. 5 overall last year.
Of course, the other issue with Tebow is that nobody knows if he's going to be picked in the first round on Thursday night, and the idea of having all those cameras on him for five hours while not being picked had to make him at least a little bit uncomfortable. He told me that wasn't a concern of his (and of course, everything we've all ever been told about this guy indicates that we have no choice but to take him at his word), but there's no doubt Tebow will be much more comfortable at home with his family, whether he's picked Thursday, Friday or Saturday.Oh, and you can see our Tebow interview, plus interviews with Sam Bradford, Gerald McCoy, C.J. Spiller and Brian Bulaga from the EA Sports event here on FanHouse TV later today and tomorrow.
