After watching Juan Pierre hit .200 with an OBP of .261 through the first half of the season, Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen has decided it's time to make a change with his leadoff hitter. Ozzie made the decision after the White Sox beat the Texas Rangers 7-5 on Thursday, and seeing Pierre go 0-for-5."He ain't playing [Friday],'' Guillen told the Chicago Sun-Times. "And then we'll try and figure out the next day, we have a couple of righties [pitching Saturday and Sunday], move him down to the No. 9 spot to make him relax a little bit.
"I don't know if he's putting a lot of pressure on himself or trying to do too much, but I'll try and give him a breather, [maybe] bat him second, I don't know. Try and figure out who my leadoff hitter will be. Maybe it will let him relax a little bit.''
As for whom the Sox will replace Pierre with atop the order, Ozzie isn't sure yet. After all, it's not like Pierre is the only member of the White Sox lineup who is having trouble getting on base. The truth is, the only player on the White Sox offense to be doing any kind of damage with a bat right now is Paul Konerko, who leads the team with a .292 average and the majors with 10 home runs.
The next highest average on the team is Mark Teahen's .268. So it's no coincidence that Teahen's name is on
e that came out of Guillen's mouth when asked about possible replacements. He also said he's toyed with the idea of having Gordon Beckham leading off, but that he also doesn't want to "put this kid in that situation."What the difference would be, I'm not sure. I mean, it's not like there's anybody on base for Beckham when he's hitting second, so the only real difference is there will be no outs instead of one.
As for how long Pierre will be moved down in the lineup, Guillen didn't say, but given Chicago's lack of real options, it probably won't be too long.
