There are always worse ways to screw up when trying to rebuild your coaching reputation after getting fired and toiling as a TV analyst for a couple years. There really are. Odds are, though, Tim Welsh is having a hard time coming up with them after getting charged with a DWI.

Welsh was hired by Hofstra last month after two years doing color commentary for Big East basketball games for ESPN. He was pulled over by police around 1 a.m. Friday when they noticed that Welsh's Lexus was still stopped at a traffic light, despite being green. Police administered a breathalyzer test that Welsh allegedly failed, leading to his arrest and being charged with a DWI.

Welsh was suspended without pay in an announcement released by the school Friday.

"We have learned through media reports of the charges against Mr. Welsh. Effective immediately, he has been suspended without pay, while the University investigates the charges against him."

Welsh previously coached Providence for 10 seasons, leading the Friars to the NCAA tournament twice. He also coached Iona for three seasons with one NCAA tournament appearance.
