Nate Robinson's $1 Million DNP-CDs

Henry Abbott of TrueHoop points out an incentive oddity that cost Nate Robinson $1 million. Robinson signed a one-year, $4 million deal with New York last fall. An incentive in Robinson's contract would have paid out $1 million if Robinson played in 58 games in the regular season and made the playoffs. That looked pretty unlikely when Robinson was a Knick. But the midseason trade to Boston put the incentive back in play.

Except Robinson played only 56 games. And in fact, the two "Did Not Play-Coach's Decision" appearances with Boston came in April. Assuming the Celtics knew full well the team would have to pay out an extra $1 million (plus another million in luxury taxes), could management have directed the coaching staff to hold Nate-Rob out? Abbott doesn't imply it, and Robinson hasn't been caught grousing about the lost cash.

Robinson had no chance at gaining the incentive before the trade anyways, so what's the loss? You can't miss a nickel you never had. And further, Robinson has only played in four of Boston's seven playoff games. I think it's completely reasonable to think the Celtics simply had no use for him in those two missed regular season games.
