Andre Johnson, Kary KubiakHOUSTON -- As expected, Andre Johnson showed up to voluntary Texans organized team activities on Thursday. Johnson is a quiet player who prefers to let his talking happen by his play on the field. However, fullback Vonta Leach doesn't mind talking for him, much to Johnson's apparent embarrassment.

As Johnson arrived at OTAs, Leach acted as sort of his hype man, yelling random things to the media throng like "Andre, another Brett Favre."

When Gary Kubiak arrived at practice, the first thing he did was walk up to Johnson, put his arm around him and say a few words. After practice, Kubiak admitted that when he got the news Wednesday night that Johnson would be at OTAs, his dinner went down a lot easier.

Understandable.

Johnson is about the last player that would like to bring attention to himself for off-the-field issues, and was surprised by the amount of attention him skipping OTAs would bring to both he and the Texans. After saying his piece with Texans owner, Bob McNair, he decided that he wanted to be back with his teammates.

The quote that all Texans fans wanted to hear from Johnson: "Like I said before, I plan on being a Texan till the day I retire, and my feelings haven't changed."

Johnson's contract situation is one that won't be easy to resolve. He still has five years left on a contract that he signed after missing time with knee issues. Since that time, Johnson has certainly been one of the best wide receivers in the league, but isn't being paid top-of-the-league money. With his agent being his uncle, and the uncertainty and politics of the NFL labor situation, working out a deal that makes Johnson happy and works with the Texans may not be easy.

Though Johnson was asked repeatedly whether he might skip any more practice time, he acknowledged that he was under contract and needed to be there, but felt better about things after speaking to McNair.
