Report: Cards Considering Marc Bulger

Marc BulgerArguably the biggest reason that the San Francisco 49ers' bandwagon is filling up in the NFC West is the retirement of former Arizona quarterback Kurt Warner. With Warner out of the picture, the Cardinals' offensive situation looks much less promising -- Warner's backup Matt Leinart finds himself locked in a battle with offseason addition Derek Anderson.

But the Cardinals may still be in the market for another QB. According to Yahoo Sports' Jason Cole, who cited an Arizona team source, the Cards' coaching staff has been underwhelmed by both Leinart and Anderson, and the team may soon make a push to sign free-agent quarterback Marc Bulger.

Bulger was cut in April by St. Louis, the team with which he'd played his entire nine-year career. His final year with the Rams, though, was a mess -- he missed seven games due to injury as St. Louis bumbled its way to an NFL-worst 1-15 record and the No. 1 pick in the 2010 draft. The Rams selected Oklahoma's Sam Bradford there, immediately anointing him as their QB of the future.

Bulger, 33, twice made the Pro Bowl as a Ram (2003 and 2006 seasons) and carries a career 84.3 passer rating. However, after that strong 2006 campaign, when Bulger tossed 24 TDs to just eight interceptions, he quickly fell off. Injuries slowed him in 2007 and he briefly lost his starting job to Trent Green in 2008.

A move to bring Bulger to Arizona would make sense on both sides. The Cardinals continue to have high hopes for Leinart, but he's yet to reward that enthusiasm, and Anderson slumped his way out of Cleveland to make way for Brady Quinn and now Jake Delhomme. If nothing else, Bulger would help the Cardinals round out an apparently lacking QB competition before the start of the 2010 season.

Adding Bulger would also reaffirm Arizona's belief that it can hold onto its NFC West crown. With St. Louis and Seattle trying to rebuild, the West may wind up being a two-horse race again between Arizona and San Francisco. And while the 49ers are an improved club, there's no reason to believe they've fully leapfrogged the Cardinals.

Bulger may not be a highly coveted player at this stage, but he might still be a step up from the Leinart-Anderson duo.
