Ann Curry Cites Wrong School's Alumni in Speech
In a commencement speech to graduates at Wheaton College in Massachusetts on Saturday, the "Today" show's Ann Curry named some of the famous alumni they were joining. Unfortunately, the graduates she named, including the Rev. Billy Graham, former House Speaker Dennis Hastert and horror movie director Wes Craven, went to a different Wheaton College -- a Christian school in Illinois with the same name.
The news anchor later apologized in an open letter posted on Wheaton's website.
"I am mortified by my mistake, and can only hope the purity of my motive, to find a way to connect with the graduates and to encourage them to a life of service, will allow you to forgive me," Curry wrote.
The Massachusetts Wheaton was a women's college, in fact, until 1988, when it opened enrollment to men, The Associated Press reported.
The school posted video of Curry's address -- with the offending portion edited out.
Despite the gaffe, Curry noted that the "gracious" students still gave her a standing ovation. "Now THAT is good manners," she wrote.
Curry also noted some of the accomplished alumni of the Wheaton College where she did speak, including former New Jersey governor and former EPA director Christine Todd Whitman and actress Catherine Keener.
Curry, who graduated from the University of Oregon in 1978, received an honorary doctor of humane letters from Wheaton.
