Johansen was about to head to college at Northeastern University in Boston, but he went to Portland instead.

Avoiding a trip far away from his British Columbia home has brought Johansen to the first round of this draft, thanks in large part to his chemistry with linemate and fellow first-round cinch Nino Niederreiter. The two clicked quickly, giving the Winterhawks a lethal line combination.

Johansen isn't going to wow anyone with his prowess in the defensive zone, but he doesn't embarrass himself there, either. Instead, Johansen is an offensive force, a top playmaker with great hands and long arms. While he has to put on around 15 pounds so he can better hold up to the rigors of NHL life, it shouldn't have a negative impact on his quickness or agility.

After at least one more year -- probably spent helping Niederreiter terrorize opponents -- in the WHL, Johansen should be ready to compete for a spot on an NHL roster in 2011. Right around the same time, his buddy Niederreiter will be showing up in (most likely) a different NHL city, chasing the same dream.
