Matt Barnes, who played in 81 games for an Orlando Magic team that finished with the second best record in the league this season, will forgo his player option for next season and become a free agent, according to a report in the Orlando Sentinel.

Barnes averaged 8.8 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for the Magic, who made it to the Eastern Conference finals before being ousted by the Celtics in six games. Barnes started 58 games for the team and averaged almost 26 minutes a night, knowing his role while providing defensive toughness and some occasional offense.

Barnes made just $1.6 million this past season, and at age 30, this might be his best chance to secure a bigger payday. He's an athletic guy who can guard and hit the three, but is someone who also has a history of letting his emotions get the best of him, which may be one of the reasons he hasn't been able to stick with anyone long term, and has played for seven different teams in his seven seasons in the league.
