James McAdoo 'Considering' Early Enrollment to North Carolina
James McAdoo, a 6-foot-8 power forward ranked fifth overall in class of 2011 by Scout.com, may enroll at Chapel Hill in the fall of 2010, his father, Ronnie McAdoo, told the News & Observer's Ken Tysiac.
"It's something he's considering, and that's about as far as I'll go with it," McAdoo's father told Tysiac. "It's something he's considering, but I don't want to get into any details about it."
McAdoo would be 17 at the time of his matriculation and would need to pass summer courses to complete credits required by the NCAA.
His presence would bolster a North Carolina team whose frontcourt was depleted in the offseason. The Tar Heels lost Deon Thompson, the NCAA's all-time leader in games played, to graduation, sophomore star Ed Davis to the NBA, and the Wear twins transferred to UCLA, reducing a six-man frontcourt to a two-man rotation.
However, Justin Knox, a graduate student transfer, committed to the Heels from Alabama last week, adding depth to the thin rotation. McAdoo, however, would add another playmaker to the Heels core, which includes overall No. 1 recruit of 2010 Harrison Barnes, shooting guard Reggie Bullock and the athletic post duo of Tyler Zeller and John Henson.
His possible early entry might seem familiar on Tobacco Road.
Duke's Andre Dawkins, a top-rated shooting guard prospect of the class of 2010, reclassified into the class of 2009 last summer after the Blue Devils lost star wing Gerald Henderson to the NBA and freshman Elliot Williams transferred to Memphis. Duke had just two guards on the roster prior to Dawkins' decision.
Dawkins, however, turned 18 shortly after enrolling at Duke, and had previously reclassified from 2009 to 2010 while transferring schools after his freshman season.
McAdoo, who is the nephew of former North Carolina All-American Bob McAdoo, turns 18 in January.
McAdoo would be the second player this spring to enroll early. Scottie Wilbekin, a class of 2011 guard, announced his intention to enter Florida early in April.
