LeBron James will make his post-flameout television debut Friday on CNN's "Larry King Live," promising to unfurl his innermost feelings on where the Cavaliers went wrong and what he plans on doing come July, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent for the first time in his NBA career.Wait, Larry King? I thought that was "Geraldo Rivera." Never mind. King will probably mispronounce the two-time MVP's name, and almost assuredly thinks LeBron plays baseball, like Larry's old friend Tris Speaker. In other words, an appearance on "Yo Gabba Gabba!" would probably lead to more elucidation than a The-King-meets-King interview. CNN's publicity arm knows this to be true. That's why they put out a teaser from the already-taped interview in which King asks James if the Cavaliers have an edge in free agency, and LeBron replies that they "absolutely" do.
FH colleague Matt Moore quipped that could very well be the "edge of a spoon," and he's right. But there's a deeper cynicism at play here, and that's that no one wants to be caught believing one danged smoke signal LeBron puts out for fear of being wrong. The Larry King interview is not just ridiculous because it's being done by softball legend Larry King, or because it fits LeBron's long-held self-image of grandeur (regarding talking to CNN instead of ESPN or a sports outlet).
It's ridiculous because it suggests there's actually something to pry from LeBron's brain regarding free agency. This whole "will he or won't he?" ordeal has been framed beautifully by those managing LeBron (and the King himself, honestly). You think the truth is going to come out a month early on cable TV?
