Here's what is happening around baseball on Thursday June 3, 2010:

• It appears the end of Dave Trembley's reign as Orioles manager is imminent. The Baltimore Sun reported Thursday afternoon that Trembley would likely be dismissed prior to Friday's opener of a weekend set against the Red Sox, and it may already have happened.

The Sun's Dan Connolly later tweeted that Andy MacPhail was at Camden Yards when the team returned from New York -- which isn't normal -- and didn't leave until about 9:50 p.m.

Not that it's entirely his fault by any stretch, but Trembley doesn't have much room to argue. The O's have the worst record in baseball at 15-39 and were outscored 34-8 on their just-completed 0-6 road trip.

• The Brewers decided to skip Dave Bush's next scheduled turn in the rotation in favor of giving Manny Parra the ball and Bush is none too pleased about it.

"They just said 'You're not starting on Sunday. They were very vague," Bush told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I don't really know what the situation is. I was told I might just pitch out of the bullpen and get pushed back (in the rotation)."

Bush, who is 1-5 with a 4.99 ERA, has been dealing with blister problems his last couple of starts but said his finger is "not an issue" in the team's decision.

• Here's a bit of trivia that puts the Griffey family's legacy into perspective: Thursday was the first day since July 2, 1974 that either Ken Griffey Sr. or Ken Griffey Jr. wasn't on a major league roster.

• The city of Mesa, Ariz., rolled out a new plan it hopes will keep Cubs spring training in the Phoenix suburb. The focus of the $84 million plan is using revenue from a hotel bed tax and special funds from the city coffers.

• The Red Sox announced they will unveil a new statue outside Gate B at Fenway Park next Wednesday featuring the likenesses of Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio, the quartet featured in David Halberstam's book, "The Teammates: A Portrait of a Friendship".

The Injury Ward

Tough day for the A's in Boston. First, starter Brett Anderson -- just back from the DL -- departed after two innings with elbow soreness. Uh-oh. Later, Ryan Sweeney got kneed in the head by teammate Mark Ellis while sliding to try and catch a foul pop and had to leave after feeling dizziness.

• The Rays, who were off Thursday, put shortstop Jason Bartlett on the DL with a strained hamstring. They'll reinstate Kelly Shoppach from the disabled list Friday to take his place -- giving them three catchers, for the time being.

Daniel Murphy's season is finished. The Mets first baseman suffered a high-grade tear of the MCL in his right knee -- while playing second base -- and will miss 4-6 months. He is not expected to undergo surgery.

White Sox third baseman Mark Teahen had pins inserted into his broken middle finger during surgery Thursday. He's expected to miss six weeks.

Pirates pitching prospect Donnie Veal will undergo Tommy John surgery Friday.

Transaction Wire

• The Mariners replaced Ken Griffey Jr. on their roster with a familiar name: former Nationals closer Chad Cordero. The reliever, who missed all of last season following shoulder surgery, had posted a 4.12 ERA and six saves in 17 appearances at Triple-A Tacoma.

• The Dodgers reinstated knuckleballer Charlie Haeger from the DL and optioned Travis Schlichting back to Triple-A.

• Outfielder Willy Taveras agreed to a minor league deal with the Phillies and will report to their Triple-A team. He essentially replaces Dewayne Wise, who opted out of his contract and became a free agent. In addition, Phillies reliever Nelson Figueroa cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A.

• Following Wednesday night's game, the Twins put Michael Cuddyer on the bereavement list following the death of his father-in-law. Infielder Danny Valencia got the call from Triple-A to take his roster spot for a few days.

• The Royals claimed reliever Kanekoa Texeira Royals_Report/statuses/15342653353">off waivers from Seattle and designated Brad Thompson for assignment.
