The Colts might have found another new backup for Peyton Manning. Indianapolis claimed Tom Brandstater off waivers from Denver on Monday, three days after he was released by the Broncos. The move was first reported on Twitter by FantasyLion.com and later confirmed by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Brandstater immediately becomes a contender to fill the No. 2 spot on the Colts' QB depth chart, right behind Manning. The position was held for several years by Jim Sorgi, but Indianapolis replaced him with Curtis Painter in 2009. Being Manning's backup is arguably the cushiest job in the NFL -- he hasn't missed a start in any of his 12 seasons -- but Painter was thrust into the limelight in the second half of Indy's Week 16 game against the Jets, when the 14-0 Colts opted to rest Manning.
With the Colts ahead 15-10, Painter was sacked and fumbled. The Jets recovered for a touchdown, giving New York the lead for good and ruining Indianapolis' shot at a perfect season.
In addition to Painter, Brandstater will also have to fight off Drew Willy and Tim Hiller for a roster spot. Willy, undrafted in 2009, and Hiller, undrafted in 2010, are likely long shots to make the Colts, but if nothing else, there's a major surplus of quarterbacks in Indianapolis.
