Before Sunday afternoon, Jeremy May was just a golf fan who attended the Memorial every year, which doesn't make him all that different than a lot of folks in Central Ohio. But after Tiger Woods' wayward tee shot on No. 1 found the side of May's neck, he became something of a celebrity.
Of course, Tiger hit two other fans during the tournament so it's not an exclusive club (although more exclusive than other Tiger-related goings-on). Either way, Mays appeared on Sacramento radio station KHTK to talk about what it's like to catch a golf ball traveling close to 100 miles per hour with your neck.
"It was a dog-leg to the right and we were on the far left side. There were actually trees blocking our view of the tee. We were out about 230 yards. Most of the drives were going 20-30 yards more than that. The drive came up short. It just nailed me. It felt like sticking my finger in a light socket and just holding it there. The camera man sits on the other side of the fairway. You can sit there and watch the cameraman because he can track the ball pretty well off the tee. I was watching that, but of course it was coming right at me."
And the second best quote from the incident comes from Golf Channel analyst Nick Faldo: "Hopefully [the tee shot hit Mays] in the shoulder, not the back of the head ... Ooohhh. Almost on the side of his face. My goodness, I hope he's alright."
And while getting hit in the neck is no picnic, it coulda been worse.
