In a move that doesn't surprise anyone, the University of Nebraska has joined the Big Ten Conference. The move comes as the Big 12 works feverishly to avoid breathing its last breath. Colorado has already gone to the Pac-10. Many of the Big 12 South's current schools are expected to follow, though formal announcements are down the road a bit. In the meantime, what does this move mean for the Big Ten?It means Husker football, obviously. It brings one of college football's most storied programs to a league already thick with them. And it unites a fan base and a conference that want each other desperately.
A poll on the Lincoln Journal Star's Huskers Extra website showed Nebraska fans supported the team's move by more than a five to one margin. The feeling is very much mutual. Fan bases across the conference are greeting the Huskers with open arms.
Nebraska will join the conference and begin athletic competition in the 2011-2012 academic year. It was not immediately known if the conference would reorganize into divisions or if a football championship game will be held.
