The Los Angeles Sparks have had a tough start to this season under new head coach Jennifer Gillom, adjusting to the retirement of Lisa Leslie and an injury to veteran point guard Ticha Penicheiro. Now this body blow.
Star forward Candace Parker left Sunday's game against Minnesota with a dislocated left shoulder. She was injured while pulling down a defensive rebound late in the second quarter.
She was taken to the locker room and then to a local hospital for observation. After Los Angeles' win, Gillom said Parker will be day-to-day. But this injury may require extended rest.
This is not a new injury for Parker, the 2008 WNBA Rookie of the Year and MVP. Parker has been wearing a brace on that shoulder since she played at Tennessee.
Parker reportedly initially aggravated the shoulder injury Friday night in a loss to Seattle.
Sunday's incident worsened the situation.
Los Angeles is 3-7 (after a 1-6 start) nearly one-third of the way through the WNBA schedule. The Sparks' combination of veterans on the back end of their careers -- five of L.A.'s 12 players are over the age of 31 -- and young players (such as point guards Andrea Riley and Kristi Toliver) have not yet proven a winning combination.
To this point, Penicheiro's injury has been among the Sparks' biggest concern.
The 35-year-old point guard came to Los Angeles after the Sacramento Monarchs folded. She was considering retirement before deciding to sign with the Sparks, but she's been unable to contribute as significantly as the Sparks need because of a variety of health issues (Achilles and ankle). She's averaging 15.0 minutes a game and has made seven starts.
