second-year safety Louis Delmas may be overestimating how much Detroit's improved this offseason. And if nothing else, he's probably underestimating how strong the NFC is as a whole.Speaking at a charity softball game hosted by teammate Derrick Williams over the weekend, Delmas said he thinks the Lions can go at least 8-8 this season -- and that should be enough to get them into the playoffs.
"We know what we can do," Delmas said, according to the Detroit Free Press. "We just slipped up last year. I know that we lost a lot of games on last drives last year. It's no surprise if we come out and get eight wins -- I won't be surprised at all. We know we can do it."
"If we get eight wins and we don't make it to the playoffs, I'll be pissed. So that's what we're shooting for."
Confidence is on the upswing in Detroit, no doubt, but Delmas might need to set the bar a bit higher. Last season, the NFC's two wild-card teams -- Green Bay and Philadelphia -- each finished 11-5. No NFC North champion has had a worse record than 10-6, either, since the division was formed in 2002.
So getting to the postseason at 8-8 would require quite a bit of good fortune.
An 8-8 mark for the Lions, on the other hand, would be cause for some celebration. Detroit's posted nine consecutive losing seasons and has just two wins combined over the past two years. The last time the franchise finished .500 or above came in 2000, when the Lions posted a 9-7 mark.
Their most recent playoff berth came a year prior in 1999. And Detroit's record that year? 8-8.
