Pierre Thomas still hasn't been able to coax the lucrative long-term deal he wants out of the Saints, but the running back did finally sign his restricted free-agent tender, according to multiple reports. Thomas will earn a little less than $1.7 million in 2010.That number's much lower than what Thomas was hoping -- and still is hoping -- to land from New Orleans. The Times-Picayune reported last week that the Saints' initial offer to Thomas was for four years and $11 million, light years away from what Thomas was said to want -- something in the vicinity of the six-year, $44.8 million deal Steven Jackson recently signed in St. Louis.
Thomas' agent, Lamont Smith, disputed that his client's demands were that high.
"We're not asking for Steven Jackson money, " Smith told the Times-Picayune. "We just want a fair deal."
Thomas played an integral part in the Saints' Super Bowl run last season. He racked up more than 1,000 yards combined rushing and receiving during the regular season to go with eight touchdowns, then added 254 total yards and three TDs in the postseason.
Share At 25 years old and entering his fourth season, he arguably has his brightest days ahead. Still, as has been the norm pretty much across the league this offseason, New Orleans has been reluctant to break the bank for Thomas with the uncertain future of the NFL's collective bargaining agreement.
For comparison's sake, Jackson, 26, rushed for 1,416 yards last season -- nearly double Thomas' total of 793. Jackson, though, didn't have to deal with the backfield competition Thomas did. Thomas, Reggie Bush and Mike Bell all saw extensive time, with Lynell Hamilton sniping 35 carries as well. Only Bell, who's now with Philadelphia, has departed that clustered situation for 2010, meaning that Thomas will again have to share carries.
