Texas Murderer Hopes 'Cops' Episode Will Save His Life
Nicholas-Michael Edwin Jean, 22, has already pleaded guilty to capital murder in the shooting of Susana Puente De Jesus, a 37-year-old woman he admits he abducted last year from the parking lot of the Pearland, Texas, dress shop where she worked.
As jurors weigh whether to sentence Jean to life in prison without parole or death by lethal injection, his defense attorneys have asked to introduce as evidence a 20-year-old episode of "Cops" that shows a 2-year-old Jean witnessing Houston police respond to a domestic dispute between his grandparents.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Jean's attorneys hope the video will show his troubled upbringing and convince Brazoria County jurors to spare his life. The video shows Jean as a "confused toddler" who watches as his grandmother tells officers that his grandfather threatened her at gunpoint, the Chronicle reported. The TV cameras continue to roll as Jean's grandfather is arrested.
State District Judge Patrick Sebesta watched Jean's "Cops" appearance Wednesday with attorneys while jurors were not present. He will decide today whether to allow the video as evidence.
A representative for "Cops" did not respond to AOL News' request for comment.
