A Global Feeling of Gloom

(June 18) -- Does the economy have you feeling blue? You're not alone.

When the Pew Research Center released a 22-nation poll on global issues earlier this week, most of the headlines focused on President Barack Obama's strong approval ratings around the world, despite domestic problems including the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and a shaky economy.

The same survey found that most Americans are unhappy with the U.S. economy -- and that people in many other nations aren't feeling so great either. Just four countries -- China, India, Brazil and Poland -- had a majority of respondents saying their economies were good, Pew said. The chart below looks at the results from selected countries in the survey.

The survey also asked people whether they were happy with the general direction their countries were heading in. Responses ranged from a low of 11 percent (Pakistan) to a high of 87 percent (China). In the U.S., just 30 percent said they were pleased with the nation's direction.
