Candace Parker, the centerpiece of the Los Angeles Sparks and one of the WNBA's top players, will miss the remainder of the season after dislocating her left shoulder against the Minnesota Lynx last Sunday.

Parker will need surgery to repair the injury, which is a carryover from her college career at Tennessee. Parker has worn a sleeve on that shoulder (pictured right) since her final playing days at UT in 2008.

"Losing Candace is definitely a huge loss for us and for the league in general," said Sparks general manager Penny Toler. "We still have a great team that is led by two Olympians and loaded with talent. Our goal, as always, is still to win."

But the Sparks (3-7) have struggled this season following the retirement of star Lisa Leslie, and Parker was picking up most of that slack. She was averaging 20.6 points and 10.1 rebounds at the time of her injury.

Parker, 24, was the 2008 WNBA MVP and the league rookie of the year. Her absence from the floor is a blow not only to her team, but to the league.

Parker had several Twitter posts Thursday evening about the NBA Finals -- her husband, Shelden Williams, plays for the Celtics -- but made no reference to her season-ending injury. She is expected to be out four to six months.
