In hopes of boosting attendance numbers that rank dead last in the majors, the Florida Marlins have decided to go through with a controversial promotion that they have planned since the winter. The team announced that it will give out its own version of the vuvuzela to the first 15,000 fans to enter Sun Life Stadium for Saturday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Marlins are marketing their version of the vuvuzela on their website as a "Marlins Air Horn." The Marlins have noted that their air horn is not as buzzing as the traditional South African device, but it is still loud.
Just this week, the New York Yankees banned vuvuzelas from entering Yankee Stadium. The sound-making device creates a loud buzzing noise, often described as irritating to those watching games live or on television when the vuvuzela is being used by fans. They have been continuously used throughout all World Cup matches in South Africa in the past week.
It will be interesting to see if the buzz created from the Marlins' vuvuzela works or backfires. After all, the team does not have much to lose in attendance numbers at this point.
