The hard luck for the Minnesota Lynx continues with the news that guard Candice Wiggins will miss the remainder of the season.
Wiggins, the former Stanford All-American, sustained a ruptured Achilles' tendon with eight seconds remaining in Tuesday night's 75-68 win over the New York LIberty at Madison Square Garden.
Wiggins had already started the season late after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in her right knee.
According to Wiggins' agent, Lindsay Kagawa, Wiggins will have surgery in Los Angeles on Friday. The procedure will be performed by orthopedist Glenn Pfeffer, who specializes in Achilles' injuries.
Her rehabilitation will take at least six months. Wiggins had averaged 15.3 points and 3.0 rebounds.
"Our hearts go out to Candice," Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve said after the game. "Candice gives us a lot of things, she gives us flexibility, she gives us a second ball-handler. She was really getting going and playing well."
The Lynx have had more than their share of hard luck with injuries to key players. Last season, star guard Seimone Augustus sustained a torn ACL and missed much of the season.
Augustus was out of the lineup again to start this current season following abdominal surgery to remove ovarian cysts. Wiggins, the team's top pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft, also started late with the knee injury and now will be out again.
Minnesota has won three in a row to improve to 5-9 after opening with the worst record in the WNBA.
