Video: John Wall's Reebok Commercial
Reebok made a bit of a splash when they signed John Wall -- who is projected by just about everyone to be the No. 1 overall pick in Thursday's NBA Draft -- to a five-year deal worth a reported $25 million. On Wednesday in D.C., the shoe company held an event introducing Wall and his first signature shoe, the ZigTech Slash, to the assembled media and the world at large.
The shoes themselves aren't all that exciting from a design standpoint, but honestly, design matters very little in the pro basketball sneaker game. If we're being honest -- and I know this may sound like sacrilege to some -- the initial incarnation of Nike's Air Jordans, in all of their red and black glory, were fairly unattractive from a purely visual standpoint.
But it's not only about the design. With performance at a similar level across the board in kicks from a wide variety of manufacturers, what becomes important are things like image, style, and of course, the athlete who wears them on the court. It's these things that provide that all-important credibility factor, which tends to be more critical than anything else.
Wall spent time at the event speaking about why he chose Reebok over other shoe companies, and why he's a fan of the shoes, and sounded convincing while doing so. (Bullets Forever has plenty of pics and a one-on-one interview with Wall that's definitely worth checking out).
Reebok also dropped Wall's first commercial for the company, which -- somewhat ironically considering all of those endorsement dollars -- only features a brief cameo of the super-hyped college star near the end of the spot.
