SAN FRANCISCO -- Madison Bumgarner, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, will start for the Giants on Saturday against the Red Sox, the pitcher's father told FanHouse. The Giants did not announce the move before Friday's game, but Bumgarner was scratched from his scheduled Triple-A start and Joe Martinez, the scheduled starter for the Giants, warmed up in the bullpen.
Bumgarner, who pitched one game in San Francisco last September, was 7-1 with a 3.16 ERA at Triple-A Fresno. There had been some concerns about lost velocity last season and this spring, but Bumgarner was better after a couple rough starts to begin the season.
Giants GM Brian Sabean said earlier this season that he believed Bumgarner's problem was insufficient preparation in the offseason. Apparently the Giants have been convinced that Bumgarner is back on track.
Bumgarner lost the competition for the No. 5 starter job to Todd Wellemeyer in the spring. Wellemeyer pitched poorly and then he got hurt. Martinez got first crack at the spot. He made one start, allowing four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Bumgarner was the 10th overall pick in the 2007 draft. Prior to this season, FanHouse baseball analyst Frankie Piliere ranked him No. 14 on his top 100 prospects list.
