Paul the Octopus Picks Germany to Win (Again)

Update: Paul the Octopus picks World Cup champion.

This story is why blogging was invented: there's an octopus named Paul who lives in Germany (but was born in England!) and he's apparently very good at picking winners in soccer matches.

Well, at least, he bides his time at the Sea Life Aquarium in Oberhausen, Germany by choosing mussels out of glasses with different flags on them, anyway. And, according to Sea Life spokeswoman Tanja Munzig, Paul picked a mussel out of a glass marked with a German flag -- instead of his other option, a glass with the English St. George's Cross -- on Friday, which clearly means that Germany will win.

Sure, you might still be skeptical but know this: according to Munzig, Paul picked 80 percent of all German games correctly during the 2008 European Championship correctly.

A few problems with that, though: it's impossible for Paul to have an 80 percent success rate since the Germans went 4-2 in the 2008 European Championship. The rules of mathematics aside, there's also the issue of probability: my cat has successfully picked Jimmie Johnson to win the Sprint Cup the last three years. (Don't ask how.)

The point is this: the octopus happens to like the German flag and Germany happens to be good at soccer (my best guess would be that he only picked Spain over Germany because, oh, I dunno, the flags don't look all that different when it comes to color).

That's not to denigrate Paul's record, which is significantly better than mine, it's just worth pointing out that he's a front-running, octopus homer. Hey, there are worse fates: Paul could live at Nausicaa and be forced to watch the French National Team.
