Tom Lewand was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving under the influence in Michigan's Roscommon County, approximately three hours north of Detroit. Lewand was later released.According to Tom Leyden of WXYZ in Detroit, Lions officials confirmed Lewand's arrest and released the following statement from Lewand:
"I am deeply sorry for my actions and take full responsibility for them," the statement read. "As a person in active recovery, I am committed to taking all necessary steps to insure nothing like this ever happens again."
The Lions named Lewand team president in late December of 2008, immediately after Detroit wrapped up the NFL's first 0-16 season.
Lions owner William Clay Ford released a statement in support of Lewand:
"Tom made a very serious mistake and he appropriately owned up to that mistake,'' the statement read. "As he continues to seek professional assistance for this problem, the Lions will support and help him in any way possible.
"I continue to have full confidence that Tom will positively lead our organization as he has since assuming his current role of team president. He has all my support.''
Share There was no immediate word concerning disciplinary action from the NFL. The league could have something to say about Lewand's actions, if proven true. The league has been cracking down on off-field issues and handed out a season-long suspension last offseason to wide receiver Donte' Stallworth after he hit and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk.
Former Lions assistant Joe Cullen was suspended by the team for the 2006 season opener after a pair of traffic incidents. Cullen was arrested in August of 2006 after pulling through a Wendy's drive-thru naked, then again about a week later with an blood-alcohol level of .12. The league later suspended Cullen, now an assistant with Jacksonville, for a game because of those arrest.
