Author, commentator and Vanity Fair columnist Christopher Hitchens announced Wednesday that he will soon undergo treatment for cancer.

In a post on Vanity Fair's website, Hitchens wrote the following:
I have been advised by my physician that I must undergo a course of chemotherapy on my esophagus. This advice seems persuasive to me. I regret having had to cancel so many engagements at such short notice.
Hitchens, 61, was touring the country to promote his new book, "Hitch-22: A Memoir." Known for his hard living and quick wit, Hitchens largely gave up smoking in 2008, The Washington Post reported.

While Hitchens regularly weighs in on a variety of topics, from politics to culture, he is perhaps most well known for his views on religion. A staunch atheist, Hitchens' book "God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything" has been a fixture on American best-seller lists since its release in 2007.

Here is Hitchens in an interview with The Washington Post's Sally Quinn, discussing his own religious upbringing.
