After hitting 462 home runs over his 17-year career, former Major League Baseball slugger Jose Canseco now feels like it's time he hit something else. Namely, a 60-year-old man. According to MLB.com, Canseco will fight Gary Hogan, the University of Arkansas-Little Rock assistant athletic director and former head baseball coach, in a celebrity boxing match. The bout is scheduled to take place before the July 9 game between the Arkansas Travelers and the Midland RockHounds.
I will write under the assumption that they are using the term "celebrity" loosely. But nonetheless it is sure to be a satisfying bout between an admitted steroid user and a former sportscaster who had dabbled in boxing some 25 years ago.
Hogan told MLB.com:
The bout will consist of four two-minute rounds."I did TV from 1977-'85, and early on the station started a segment called Sports Challenges, where the reporters would play against a golf or a tennis pro, things of that nature," recalled Hogan. "I took that concept to the next level and ended up fighting [former light heavyweight contender] Mike Quarry in front of 7,500 people at [former home of the Travelers] Ray Winder Field."
I imagine Hogan's skill level to be somewhere between Sikahema and Bonaduce -- I'm sure he gets that a lot. Hogan still spars in his local gym from time to time, so I don't think he is to be taken lightly. Canseco, on the other hand has been a bit busy with his "acting" career.
