Women who are extra loud in the bedroom might not be having an extra good time, according to a new study that dismisses much female vocalization during sex as play-acting.
Even worse, the moans and groans were usually intended to "manipulate" male partners -- into speeding up the process.
A team of scientists out of the U.K., whose work was published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, polled 71 women about their carnal noise-making.
They divided noises into different categories (including "instructional commands" and "scream/shriek/squeal") and then asked women which they made, why and whether they associated the noises with orgasm -- if, that is, they had one.
"Women reported using these vocalizations to 'speed up' their partner's ejaculation due to boredom, fatigue, discomfort, time limitations," Gayle Brewer, one of the study's authors, told MSNBC.
A full 25 percent of the women polled admitted they regularly used noises to fake orgasms.
But the news isn't all bad. A remarkable 87 percent of women who behaved loudly did so to improve their partner's self-esteem.
