Robert Christopher Metsos failed to meet with police in the Cypriot city of Larnaca today, The Guardian reported. Metsos is required under the conditions of his bail to meet with police every day.
"An arrest warrant has been issued, and if found he will be arrested immediately," an officer at the police station in Larnaca told The Guardian. "He has broken his pledge to be here."
The FBI alleges that Metsos was a member of a Russian espionage ring and traveled to the U.S. to pay off the other 10 members. Authorities say the accused Russian agents in the U.S. were part of so-called sleeper cells, posing as ordinary citizens for years at a time while gathering information.
Metsos was arrested Tuesday at Larnaca International Airport. He was released on a bail of 20,000 euros (almost $25,000), pending an extradition within 30 days, The Guardian said.
"I had no direct or indirect communication with my client today," Metsos' lawyer, Michalis Papathanasiou, told Bloomberg BusinessWeek. "Yesterday he told me he intended to appear at the police station."
