The University of South Carolina basketball has entered the NCAA tournament as a No. 2 seed only to be upset in the first round. The following year, with a No. 3 ranking, there was another debacle. And the football team has had a Heisman Trophy winner (George Rogers) and two marquee coaches (Lou Holtz, Steve Spurrier) and never come close to winning a national title. But on Tuesday, the Gamecocks finally triumphed, winning the NCAA college baseball championship over UCLA.

"You want to play among the best and try to be one of the best one day. Many times it's just a dream but sometimes it becomes reality," said coach Ray Tanner.

It was USC's first baseball championship -- and the first post-Depression national title in any sport, save women's track. But Columbia, S.C., is a college football town, and spring practices have begun. The baseball title was a welcome relief, but sports disappointment is only a few months away.
