Andreas Serrano Guest Judges on Bravo

Andreas Serrano, the controversial photographer whose "Piss Christ" created a stir in the 1980's, guest judged this week on Bravo's reality show, "Work of Art."

"Piss Crist" is a photograph of a plastic crucifix submerged in the artist's urine. When it exhibited, conservative senators were outraged not only at the piece but that Serrano had received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

On the show, the contestants were shown examples of Serrano's work -- some feature menstrual blood, semen and feces -- and instructed to come up with controversial work on their own.

If it seems odd that an edgy artist should guest judge a popular TV show, Serrano has long done commercial work in addition to his art. I once collaborated with him for a New York Times Magazine article -- he photographed Shad Smith, the subject of my profile on a gay, ex-con mixed martial artist.
