Tennessee Titans quarterback Chris Simms was arrested early Thursday morning in New York City, where he was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of marijuana, according to the New York Post.Citing a source, the newspaper reported that Simms, 29, was stopped around 2 a.m. on W. Houston Street. He displayed "red eyes, flushed face and slurred speech," the report said.
The Post said Simms' wife, Danielle, who is 8-months pregnant, was in the car with him when he was stopped.
Simms' attorney, Nathan Semmel, told the Post the charges were unsubstantiated.
"My client never admitted to smoking marijuana that night. He said he was smoking cigarettes that night," said Semmel, who said there were two other unnamed passengers in the car at various times during the evening.
Simms spent the morning getting booked and awaiting arraignment at Manhattan Criminal Court, according to the Post.
A third-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2003, Simms has struggled to find playing time since starting 10 games and taking the Bucs to the playoffs in 2005. The next season, Simms ruptured his spleen, an injury from which it appears he has yet to totally recover.
Share Simms saw action in three games for the Broncos in 2009, then signed with Tennessee in April, his second stint with the Titans.
His father, Phil Simms, a former Super Bowl MVP quarterback with the New York Giants, is a veteran NFL television analyst for CBS.
