Damon Evans, the director of athletics at the University of Georgia, has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Shortly before midnight Wednesday, a Georgia State Patrol trooper stopped Evans, driving a 2009 BMW, the paper reported. Evans was arrested and charged with DUI and failure to maintain his lane. He was taken to Atlanta's city jail. Evans refused to take a breath test.

"The trooper made the traffic stop after observing the manner he was driving," state patrol spokesman Gordy Wright told the newspaper. "He got him stopped, detected an odor of alcohol, administered field sobriety tests and determined he was less than safe to be driving."

Evans was released early Thursday, the newspaper reported. University spokesman Tom Jackson said the school was "aware of the report, and I expect we'll issue a statement later today."

Wright told the newspaper a passenger with Evans was also taken to jail, but he had no further details on that.

This is a video appeal Evans made to Georgia fans to not drink and drive.

UPDATE: Evans has publicly apologized and will keep his job.
