The Vancouver Canucks have signed grinder Manny Malhotra to a three-deal for a reported $2.5 million per season.

The 30-year-old Malhotra, who made $700,000 last season with San Jose, had 14 goals and 19 assists for 33 points for the Sharks. The 14 goals marked a career high for Malhotra, who was a first round pick of the New York Rangers in the 1998 draft. He was a very effective third-line forward for the Sharks last season, and excelled in the team's second round playoff victory over Detroit.

In 705 career NHL regular season games with the Rangers, Dallas, Columbus and San Jose, Malhotra has 90 goals and 140 assists.

The Canucks also reportedly awarded Malhotra a no-trade clause. Stay tuned to this space for confirmation on what appears to be a fairly outlandish deal for a role player, however respected Malhotra may be.
