Sure, Bryan Colangelo is losing Chris Bosh. He knows it. He's known it for a while. And the odds of him digging himself out of the considerable hole he's dug are not great. But the world keeps spinning, and the rotation he's got to worry about at this point is losing Amir Johnson and his unrestricted free agent status.Or I should say, "was Amir Johnson."
Yahoo! Sports reports that Amir Johnson has agreed to a five year, $34 million deal with the Raptors that he'll sign July 8th.
This is one of those deals where the casual fan is going to boggle at a player with Johnson's stat line getting $34 million and 5 years and the hoop-heads are going to simply nod and say "Yup." After all, he was the 36th ranked free agent on Tom Ziller's Top 50 list.
Johnson is a 23-year-old rebounding beast. He ranked 14th among all power forwards in rebounding rate this season. His defensive rating plummeted being on the Raptors, but if there's one player you look at it and you can't blame for the Raps' porous approach, it's Johnson (even more so than Bosh). Compared to the kind of money that Colangelo has dished out for players like Hedo Turkoglu and Andrea Bargnani, $6.8 million for Johnson is a steal. Maybe now with this contract he'll start to get the minutes he deserves.
