Paul the Octopus

Paul, the so-called "psychic" octopus, picked Spain to beat Germany in Wednesday's semifinal match, not the best omen for the Germans since the cephalopod has selected the winner in each game involving the national team at the 2010 World Cup.

Paul's handlers at the Sea Life Aquarium of Oberhausen, Germany, claim that he had correctly predicted the winner of each game involving Germany. He does so by choosing a jar of mussels placed in his tank, each with a flag of the two nations facing each other.

His selection was carried live on German television.

The underwater tout isn't infallible. He incorrectly picked Germany to beat Spain during the 2008 Euro Championships.

Overall, his handlers claim Paul has about an 80 percent success rate, including picking the winner of all five of Germany's World Cup matches this year -- including Serbia's upset of Germany in group play.
